![]() For comparison’s sake, the average helicopter can go up to about 160 miles per hour. In driving mode the Liberty can go up to 99 miles per hour, and in flight mode its max speed is 112 miles per hour. It needs a runway at least 590 feet long for takeoff and 100 feet long for landings. So while the car can hover like a helicopter, it can’t take off or land vertically. The Liberty is a gyrocopter, which means rotors on top provide lift, but they’re not powered by the engine a separate propeller engine on the back of the car provides thrust. It looks a lot like what you’d probably expect or imagine a flying car to look like: a cross between a small helicopter and a very aerodynamic car (with a foldable propeller on top). The car is called the PAL-V Liberty, and it’s made by Dutch company PAL-V. Now drivers in the Netherlands are one step closer to making this vision a reality, as a commercial flying car has just been approved for use on roads there. In the next section, we will look at the flying cars being developed today that eventually could be in our garages. We’ve all had the experience of sitting in bumper-to-bumper traffic with nothing but miles of red taillights ahead, wishing we could somehow break away from the pack and zoom off to our destination traffic-free. ![]() With advances in lightweight material, computer modeling and computer-controlled aircraft, the dream is very close to becoming reality. However, they proved that a car could be built to fly, and inspired a new group of roadable aircraft enthusiasts. These pioneers never managed to develop a viable flying car, and some even died testing their inventions. even considered marketing the vehicle, but the decade's oil crisis dashed those plans It cruised at 120 mph (193 kph) in the air and was the second and last roadable aircraft to receive FAA approval. A 10-foot-long (3-meter) drive shaft connected the engine to a pusher propeller. Taylor covered his car with a fiberglass shell. The Aerocar was designed to drive, fly and then drive again without interruption.
